Welcome to Painter Elementary School, home of the ARUSD Vietnamese Immersion Program (VIP). Our Dual Language Immersion (DLI) program focuses on oral language practice through Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) to emphasize age appropriate language production and age appropriate mechanics and grammar. Through this practice, students approach biliteracy in reading, writing, and oral language production in both English and Vietnamese. Students can enroll in Painter VIP from any district through an interdistrict transfer. However, we refer all Franklin-McKinley students back to FMSD. The Vietnamese Immersion Program is expanding for fall 2022! With over 80 enrolled students, we offer the Painter VDLI under Alum Rock Union School District to grades T4, TK, K, 1, and 2, with expansion to grade 3 in FALL 2023. Older siblings can enroll in our standard English program to grade 5 or neighboring Sheppard Middle School, grades 6-8. We are the third DLI school in the district after the Spanish Immersion programs of Adelante I and Adelante II, which are both T4K to 8th grade campuses. Students will learn the content in both English and Vietnamese under the DLI 50/50 model. Half of the day will emphasize learning in English and the other half in Vietnamese. At least half of the students should be Vietnamese heritage/home language speakers and the other half can be of any language background. = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = We collaborate with partners in the community, across the state, and at the University level, with CSU Fullerton as the primary hub for Asian Language DLI certification in the State of California. The California Association of Bilingual Education (CABE) Asian Languages Round Table, National Resource Center of Asian Languages, Assocation of Two-Way Immersion and Dual Language Immersion (ATDLE), and doctoral research at Santa Clara University have informed our program development. Painter traditionally offers a Standard English Program for student home addresses within our school site boundary. It is increasingly our STEAM Embedded Program, as teachers engage in continual learning in FOSS science training from our Santa Clara County Office of Education (SCCOE) science coordinator and contract with Science from Scientists. We are continually developing the program offerings and in the last two years have added partnerships with: Little Heroes Sports, Science From Scientists, Community School of Music and Art from Mountain View, and the Get Down Dance Studio of Japantown, San Jose.
